=====
Sun 7-18 Winchester VA deluge

A rare July nor'easter was forecast to bring a general 1-2" of rain to
the LWX CWA Saturday night & Sunday. Generally a few tenths fell. Radar
from 3 locations confirmed almost 7" fell in the Chesapeake Bay north of
the tidal Potomac River early Sunday am.

There was no rain on radar in the Shenandoah Valley at 4am. When I went
to bed at 5am showers were forming south of my location. About 7am, I
was awoken by a very loud thunder clap. I went to the check windows,
closed them, & noticed that it was heavy rain.

I went back to bed, a got up at noon. I checked my rooftop rain guage,
and I did double take. It read 3.35"! (I later checked by back yard
guage that read 3.62", and averaged the 2 readings for a total of
3.48".)

I noticed there was water on the floor, again, but not in the usual
location. This water came in near the furnace, perhaps from the chimney.

I started the cleanup process (yes we have a wet vac). I usually walk
barefoot when the floor is wet, a decision that I now regret.

I have a pair of non skid shoes for my job, & wish I had worn them from
the start that AM. I fell and have been sore in the lower back & knee.
Both are slightly less sore now, but I skipped work this week, and &
will be on vacation next week. I hope I can go back the 1st week of
August.

And the shoes... night & day difference than regular shoes, & will I
continue to buy them.
(I got mine at K-mart).

Rain totals from the Winchester area:
*Charlotte Dehart ES (city's north side) 3.8"
My location (southeast side) 3.48"
*Senseny Rd ES (1mi E of city) 3.30"
WINC radio (NE side city) 2.40"
Winchester Apt (7 miles SE) 1.83"
* These 2 AWS locations had 2" or more between 7 & 8am.

A flash flood warning was issued about 8am & expired at noon. In
addition, at least 4 to 5" fell near Clearbrook & Rest VA, exits 321 &
323 on I-81. The water drained into the Opequon Creek, which 12 hours
later crested 1 foot below bank full in Martinsburg WV. It was the only
gauged station with sharp rises from the Frederick Co deluge.

Areas in northern Warren & Shenandoah Cos & southern Berkeley Co WV had
1-2" rain (both next to Frederick Co VA. However areas just west & east
had only a few tenths. In fact, the western part of the county had
little as well.
