Tropical Storm Celia is over the eastern North Pacific Ocean far
from any land. Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, Celia is centered 855
miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Celia is heading towards
the west at 7 mph with highest sustained winds of 70 mph. Celia is of
no threat to any land and is likely to weaken over the next few days.
Tokyo Wednesday suffered another day of withering heat. Its high
of 101 degrees came on the heals of a 103-degree reading reached
Tuesday afternoon. Wedged between the two searing daytimes was a
sultry night no "cooler" than 86 degrees. The average temperature
extremes this time of year would be about 85 degrees by day and 74
degrees at night. So far this sweltering month, the mean temperature
is more than 8.5 degrees above average.
Wednesday, a swath straddling the borders of Mongolia, Russia and
China was about as hot as it ever is. On the Russian side, Priargunsk
and Aksha reached 107 degrees. Mongolia had 106 at Choybalsan, and
105 at Dashbalbar. Hottest of the lot, though, was likely that of
Xin Barag Youqi, Inner Mongolia, China, where it was at least 107
degrees at mid afternoon. All of these were at least 25 degrees above
average; that of Aksha was 32 degrees above average.
The Amundsen-Scott station Wednesday had its lowest temperature
of the year thus far. It was 107.9 degrees below zero. July's average
low temperature is 81 degrees below zero.
Wednesday, rainfall was 6.3 inches at Chanthaburi in southeastern
Thailand.
Lampa, Malekula, in Vanuatu, had rainfall of 6.3 inches
Wednesday.
Tuesday, thundery downpours splashed The Pas, Manitoba, Canada,
with 2.8 inches of rain.
Many parts of Vietnam were hit by downpours this midweek. The
central coastal town of Da Nang, for example, collected about 4.5
inches of rain within 12 hours Wednesday. In the north, the national
capital, Hanoi, was soaked by 4.7 inches of rain Tuesday to Wednesday.
Northwestern Mexico's state of Sonora sweltered on Tuesday.
Hermosillo, the state capital, surged to 114 degrees while the
northern town of Altar spiked to 113.
