As of late Friday morning, EDT, Tropical Storm Kompasu was inland
over southern China about 75 miles north of Hong Kong. The storm had
highest sustained winds of 40 mph -- barely above the threshold for a
tropical storm -- as it drifted towards the north at 13 mph. This
small, weak storm will dissipate quickly over hilly ground in
far-southern China within the next day or so.
Taejon, South Korea, had 7.4 inches of rain Thursday and Friday.
Most fell within 12 hours. Seoul, within the same span of time,
collected 5.8 inches. For the month thus far, Seoul has had about 18
inches of rain versus a mean monthly rainfall of 14 inches (yes, July
is normally wet in Korea).
Wednesday night through early Friday, rainfall at the Temiscaming
dam, Quebec, Canada, was 5.8 inches.
Friday, abnormal heat registered 20 to 30 degrees above average
over east-central Asia. In Russia eastward from Lake Baykal, highs of
100 to locally 105 degrees were set in the republics of Chita and
Buryatia. Novo-Selenginsk reached 104 degrees, or 27 degrees above
average. Buryatia's capital, Ulan Ude, observed 101 degrees. In
Chita, Aginskoye topped out with 102. Northeastern Mongolia also
sweltered: Choybalsan spiked to 103 degrees.
Lahore, Pakistan, Friday had its fair share of life-giving summer
rain. A thunderstorm unloaded 2.6 inches of rain within two or three
hours.
Friday's low of -112.5 degrees was, by a narrow two-tenths of a
degree, the lowest temperature of the year thus far at the Vostok
station, Antarctica.
Thursday and Thursday night, 3.8 inches of rain splashed Iguazu,
Argentina.
Intense cold has gripped the southern cordillera of Patagonia
since mid week. Along the Chilean side, Balmaceda set consecutive lows
of 9 and 10 degrees below zero Thursday and Friday -- nearly 40
degrees below average. Thursday's high of 14 degrees was 26 degrees
below normal. The cold was fostered by light winds and fair skies over
snow cover within a strong polar high. Elsewhere Friday morning,
Coyhaique, Chile, dipped to 8 degrees. Argentina had 14 at Perito
Moreno and Esquel. Colder spots away from the Andes included
Maquinchao with 9 degrees, and Rio Gallegos with 12.
Thursday and Thursday night, a tropical wave pelted some of the
Lesser Antilles with soaking rains. Dominica, one of the Leeward
Islands, was hit by some of the heaviest downpours. The Canefield
airport, north of Roseau in the island's southwest, was doused by 4.0
inches of rain within 24 hours.
Friday and Friday night, local time, hurricane-strength winds
belted Australia's Casey base on the shores of East Antarctica. Winds
blew steadily at 60 mph and higher for more than 15 hours, and rose
above 80 mph for at least 3 of these hours. Temperatures climbed from
near 0 degrees to 15 as wind-whipped snow blew through the air.
