An apparent major tornado between Harrisburg & Lancaster & near Hershey
Park in eastern PA Wed afternoon. Several dozen homes were destroyed or
heavily damaged in Lebanon County. The heliocopter pilot for WJZ tv
(Baltimore MD) estimated the path at 7 miles.

The area southeast of Washington DC was under a tornado warning at the
dinner hour Wednesday, but tv stations had no pictures from that area at
11pm.

Heaviest rain was west of Fredericksburg VA & east of Baltimore MD (in
the flood zone). Again no pictures from either area. A few shots of
uprooted trees in the Washington area. Baltimore station WJZ had aerial
shots of the PA tornado.

Here in nw VA, Winchester missed out on the storms. The storms that
raked the Washington region had formed just after noon in the Shenandoah
Valley the moved east about 30mph.

Possible Tornado Levels Lebanon County Homes
POSTED: 3:52 pm EDT July 14, 2004
UPDATED: 12:42 am EDT July 15, 2004

CAMPBELLTOWN, Pa. -- Severe weather tore apart homes and brought down
trees and power lines Wednesday afternoon.

Campbelltown, in Lebanon County, received the worst storm damage due to
the possible touchdown of two tornadoes, News 8 reported.

There have been 24 injuries reported in the area and up to 50 houses
damaged. The victims were taken to Campbelltown Fire Co. for treatment.

A number of homes in South Londonderry Township, in the Country Squire
Estates, were leveled and others were ripped open.

The homeowner, Ronnie, said she couldn't hear a thing as she rushed to
close all the windows, but suddenly everything started blowing off, and
she quickly grabbed her family members and went to the basement.

"We barely made it," she said.

The family has lived in the home for 26 years.
Cleanup in the neighborhood is getting under way.

Campbelltown Fire Co. has opened a shelter for people who are homeless.
Another shelter has opened in Lebanon County at Salem United Church of
Christ.

The Penn State Hershey Medical Center activated its External Disaster
Program. It set up extra beds and called in extra staff and doctors. The
hospital has also dispatched the Life Lion helicopter to Campbelltown,
in Lebanon County, to help the emergency care that has been set up at
the Campbelltown Fire Co.

"We seen an 18-wheeler lifted off the ground," said Mike Smith, a
supervisor at Flight Systems.

The National Weather Service is reporting downed trees in Adams,
Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. A trained
spotter reported wind gusts in Shiremanstown, Cumberland County, up to
62 mph. The Lebanon County emergency manager reported many damaged
houses along Route 322. Hail has been reported in Lancaster and York
counties.
