Over the eastern North Pacific Ocean, Blas has lost tropical storm
strength and is now a tropical depression. Late Wednesday afternoon,
EDT, Tropical Depression Blas is centered 540 miles west of Cabo San
Lucas, Mexico. Blas holds highest sustained winds of 35 mph; it is
heading towards the west-northwest at 14 mph. Blas is forecast to
head towards the northwest and west for the next few days with cool
seas likely leading to its disintegration.
Tropical Storm Kompasu has made its way to the South China Sea
after having passed through the Luzon Strait from the western
Philippine Sea. Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, the core of Kompasu is
about 185 south-southwest of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Its highest sustained
winds being a little above 50 mph, Kompasu is heading towards the
west-southwest at 20 mph. A landfall in southern China is foreseen
Friday or Friday night, local time.
Wednesday, withering heat baked the very heart of Asia. In the far
west of China, Turfan reached 115 degrees, a mark that was also
attained Tuesday. The regional capital, Urumqi, reached 111 degrees,
or 25 degrees above average. In the Russian republic of Tuva, Kyzyl
registered 103, or more than 25 degrees above average. Most, in
southwestern Mongolia, reached 102 degrees, or at least 20 above
normal.
Freakish warming hit the foot of Argentina's Andes Monday night
and early Tuesday. In the far north, Salta chilled to near 30 degrees
before daybreak, but a strong, down-sloping "zonda" wind set in after
sunrise zooming the temperature 37 degrees in one hour. The day later
saw a high of 91 degrees with humidity as low as 2%. Much farther south,
the zonda kicked in with blowing dust and 1% humidity at San Juan; the
temperature soared by daybreak to 74 degrees, or far above the mean
daily high of 60 degrees, and ultimately hit 85 degrees.
Wednesday was abnormally warm in a small part of northern
Scandinavia well beyond the Arctic Circle. In northern Finland's Kevo
Nature Park, a high of 81 degrees was registered whereas July's mean
daily high is 64.
