Tuesday, some of Typhoon Mindulle's high winds and flooding rains
are pounding northern Philippines. Late Tuesday afternoon, EDT, the
eye of Mindulle is 325 miles north-northeast of Manila, Philippines,
or about 50 miles off northeastern Luzon Island. Mindulle is drifting
west-northwestwards at 5 mph with highest sustained winds of nearly
145 mph. The next 18-24 hours will be rough in northern Philippines
with flooding rains over northern Luzon and devastating winds in the
smaller islands of the Luzon Strait. Later, Mindulle's might may be
brought to bear against Taiwan.
As of Tuesday afternoon, local time, rainfall had already topped
10 inches at Baguio, a highland city of Luzon, Philippines. Rain was
still falling heavily. Rainfall at a much lower site, Laoag, on the
island's northwest coast, also surpassed 10 inches Tuesday night,
local time.
Typhoon Tingting now has the Northern Mariana Islands in its wake;
it is bearing down on Japan's Volcano Islands. Late Tuesday afternoon,
EDT, Tingting is located 150 miles southeast of Iwo Jima. Heading
towards the north at 15 mph, Tingting's highest sustained winds are
about 85 mph. Tingting is forecast to take a broad, slow curve to the
right, or east, as it makes its way northward over the next few days.
Such a path would bring the storm right over or slightly east of the
Volcano Islands with 12 to 24 hours.
Sunday and Monday, Tropical Storm -- and later Typhoon -- Tingting
pounded Guam with gales and torrential rains. At the Agana airport,
rainfall was about 21.5 inches within 48 hours, and there were many
wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph. The island of Saipan, being much nearer
the path of Tingting, was blasted Monday with winds of 60 to 70 mph
with rainfall nearing ten inches.
Fiery heat burned much of Iberia again Tuesday. In Portugal, Evora
reached 108 degrees after setting a high of 107 Monday. Castelo Branco
registered a second-straight 104-degree high. Topping a lengthy list
of hot spots in Spain was Cordoba where 106 degrees was reached.
Caceres and Jerez de la Frontera were nearly as hot -- both peaked at
105 degrees.
Tuesday and Tuesday night, local time, saw locally heavy rain on
New Zealand's North Island. At Hicks Bay in the east, rainfall was
4.5 inches within 18 hours.
