Monday, big and powerful Typhoon Mindulle is looming off
northeastern Luzon Island, Philippines. Late in the afternoon, EDT,
Mindulle has a well-marked eye about 370 miles northeast of Manila,
Philippines. Mindulle is slipping towards the northwest at 5 mph with
highest sustained winds of about 145 mph. Mindulle is forecast to head
towards the northwest for the next 24 to 48 hours, its high winds and
flooding rains brushing northern Philippines. Later, a swing to the
north, and potentially to Taiwan, is indicated. Further strengthening
is foreseen.
Tingting is a strengthening typhoon. Late Monday afternoon, EDT,
Tingting is located 290 miles north-northwest of Saipan, Northern
Mariana Islands, and 385 miles north of Guam. Highest sustained winds
about Tingting are reckoned to be 90-95 mph; it is bearing towards
the north-northwest at 13 mph. Tingting is forecast to take a curving
path towards the north over the next 24 to 48 hours. After battering
the Northern Mariana Islands, Tingting would become a serious threat
to Japan's Volcano Islands such as Iwo Jima.
Sunday and Monday, Tropical Storm -- and later Typhoon -- Tingting
pounded Guam with gales and torrential rains. At the Agana airport,
rainfall was about 21.5 inches within 48 hours, and there were many
wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph. The island of Saipan, being much nearer
the path of Tingting, was blasted Monday with winds of 60 to 70 mph
with rainfall nearing ten inches.
Sunday and again Monday, withering heat off the northern Sahara
invaded Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula. Beni-Mellal and Kasba-Tadla
topped out 111 and 112 degrees, respectively, on Sunday, then reached
114 and 115 degrees Monday. The city of Fez, where 110 degrees was
reached Sunday, peaked at 111 Monday. Sunday, Spain and Portugal
suffered 100-degree heat. Armilla and Cordoba, Spain, registered 107
degrees. In Portugal, Evora topped out 102 degrees. On Monday,
Cordoba soared to 108 degrees and Evora spiked to 107.
Meantime, Portugal's Azores, some 900 miles west of the mainland,
were hit by locally heavy rain Sunday to Monday. On the island of
Santa Maria, rainfall was 2.3 inches within 24 hours whereas only 0.9
of an inch of rain falls on average in all of June.
Soaking rains have pelted portions of southern South America in
recent days. In Argentina, San Carlos de Bariloche was drenched by
6.8 inches of rain within 54 hours to midafternoon Monday. Falling
temperatures Monday afternoon led to a changeover to snow. Osorno,
Chile, meanwhile, collected 3.8 inches of rain during the same time.
