Sunday afternoon, EDT, Typhoon Mindulle was centered about 430
miles east-northeast of Manila, Philippines. Mindulle is moving toward
the northwest at 9mph and has top sustained winds of 80 mph. The
storm is expected to continue on a northwesterly heading for the next
few days and to strengthen a bit more. This would take the center of
the storm through the Luzon Strait and very close to the southern end
of Taiwan.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Tingting was centered about 155 miles
northeast of Agana, Guam Sunday afternoon, EDT. With top winds of
65-70 mph, strengthening Tingting is heading toward the northwest at 9
mph. The storm is forecast to follow a path across the Mariana
Islands, probably just north of Saipan Monday morning, local time.
This storm is also anticipated to reach typhoon strength before
Monday.
As the center of Tingting passed east and northeast of Guam on
Sunday, the island was lashed by torrential rain and tropical storm
force winds. Reports of over a foot of rain within 24 hours have been
received from the island along with wind gusts to 55 mph.
Friday night into Saturday, parts of Ireland were subjected to a
second drenching rain in less than a week. In Cork, rainfall was 1.38
inches and winds gusted to 40 mph. Earlier in the week, a powerful
storm sweeping through Ireland dropped 1.77 inches. Combined with
other, smaller events, the two storms bring the total rainfall so far
this month to 3.68 inches, compared to the normal for the entire month
of 2.20 inches.
Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland was lashed by high winds Saturday and
Saturday night. During this time, winds were sustained fro 45 to 55
mph. On Sunday, the wind "slackened a bit" to 40-45 mph.
Fukue, Japan was swamped by 5.5 inches of rain within 24 hours on
Saturday. This brings total rainfall for the past three days to 7.8
inches.
