Friday ended an extraordinary week of record-setting heat over
Yukon Territory, Canada. The provincial capital, Whitehorse, topped
out 90 degrees, thereby making it a seven-day's stretch of 90 to as
much as 92 degrees daily. Friday's old record mark was overrun by 8
degrees. The average high temperature for the hottest seven days of
the heat wave was 91, or 25 degrees above the average.
As if on a temperature teeter totter, the Canadian weather
setting, which of late has featured lofty heights of unusual heat in
the northwest, has also seen some chilly lows in the area of the
northern Great Lakes and Hudson's Bay. Witness Radisson, Quebec, site
of the first La Grande hydro dam. A cold, soaking rain falling
Thursday to Friday night amounted to 2.3 inches. Fair enough, but for
a short while early Friday, then again Friday night, there were bursts
of heavy, wet snow falling at near freezing. Snowfall in all was four
centimeters, or shy of two inches.
Tropical Storm Mindulle was 540 miles east-northeast of Manila,
Philippines, as of Saturday evening EDT with highest sustained winds
of 60-65 mph. Mindulle was moving toward the northwest at 8 mph.
Mindulle is forecast to turn more toward the north within the next day
or so, keeping the storm's core east of the northern Philippines.
Strengthening to typhoon intensity is also anticipated.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Tingting was about 330 miles east of
Agana, Guam Saturday evening, EDT. With top winds of 50 mph, Tingting
is heading toward the north-northwest at 9 mph. The storm is forecast
to follow a path across the Mariana Islands, probably just north of
Saipan Monday morning, local time. This storm is also anticipated to
reach typhoon strength later Monday or Monday night.
Unusually wet weather persisted through the week on the island of
Guam. On Friday, for example, another 1.0 inch of rain fell raising
the monthly tally to about 15.6 inches. On average, roughly 4.7 inches
of rain falls here during the first 25 days of June, and the monthly
mean rainfall is 5.8 inches.
Northerly winds warmed long stretches of South Africa's southern
shores 15-20 degrees above average on Friday. Topping the list of warm
spots was George where 86 degrees was registered. East London set a
high of 85 degrees and both Port Elizabeth and Mosselbaai (Mossel Bay)
reached 83. Slightly inland, Riversdale climbed to 85.
It's been unusually hot for about a week now in a small part of
eastern China encompassing the provinces of Shaanxi and Shanxi.
Friday, the city of Xi'an set a second-consecutive high of 103
degrees. It was also the fourth day out of six to surpass 100 degrees,
and the other two days topped out at 98 and 97 degrees. The average
temperature during this six-day stretch was almost 14 degrees above
the mean. Nearby, both Baoji and Yuncheng reached 101 degrees on
Thursday and on Friday. In each of these three cities, June's average
daily high is in the middle to upper 80s.
