June 25, 2004 5:31 p.m.

Tropical Storm Mindulle continues to ply the southern Philippine
Sea. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, Mindulle is 730 miles east of Manila,
Philippines. Its highest sustained winds up to almost 60 mph, Mindulle
is bearing towards the west at 9 mph. Mindulle is forecast to take a
broad, sweeping turn towards the northwest and the north over the next
few days. Such a path would keep the storm's core east of the northern
Philippines. Strengthening to typhoon intensity is also anticipated.

A new tropical depression has come to life over the western North
Pacific Ocean north of the eastern Caroline Islands. Late Friday
afternoon, EDT, the depression holds top sustained winds of nearly 35
mph about a center which is 475 miles east-southeast of Agana, Guam;
it is drifting westward at 7 mph. This cyclone is forecast to move
more-or-less northwestward during the next 48-72 hours and to soon
acquire tropical storm strength. In time, it may threaten Northern
Mariana Islands, chiefly those in the north.

Unusually wet weather persisted through the week on the island of
Guam. On Friday, for example, another 1.0 inch of rain fell raising
the monthly tally to about 15.6 inches. On average, roughly 4.7 inches
of rain falls here during the first 25 days of June, and the monthly
mean rainfall is 5.8 inches.

Northerly winds warmed long stretches of South Africa's southern
shores 15-20 degrees above average on Friday. Topping the list of warm
spots was George where 86 degrees was registered. East London set a
high of 85 degrees and both Port Elizabeth and Mosselbaai (Mossel Bay)
reached 83. Slightly inland, Riversdale climbed to 85.

Make that six straight at Whitehorse. The Canadian territorial
capital of Yukon set a high of 90 degrees Thursday. First, this made
for six-straight record daily highs. What is more, it made for six in
a row -- 90-degree readings, that is. Far down the Yukon River,
Dawson, at the heart of the Klondike gold fields, registered another
90-degree high Thursday.

East Asia, in keeping with the month of June, has had locally
excessive rainfall this week. Within about the last two days,
rainfall has been 6.6 inches at Nanjing, eastern China. A mountain,
Huang Shan, was washed with 8.3 inches of rain. Southwestern Japan
picked up 5.6 inches at Izuhara, between the mainland and southern
Korea. Southern Korea registered 3.9 inches at Wando.

Thursday night and Friday, locally excessive rains pelted the
borderlands of eastern Ukraine and southern Russia. At Luhans'k,
Ukraine, 24-hour rainfall was 3.4 inches. Separately, and far to the
east, heavy rains were plentiful over the heart of Siberia. At
Bol'shaya Murta, rainfall was 5.1 inches within about 24 hours.

Soaking rains pelted parts of far northeastern India Wednesday to
Friday. In Agartala, a city only a short distance east of the border
with Bangladesh, rainfall was about 8.4 inches within 24 hours ended
Thursday, then another 2.5 inches within several hours Friday.

It's been unusually hot for about a week now in a small part of
eastern China encompassing the provinces of Shaanxi and Shanxi.
Friday, the city of Xi'an set a second-consecutive high of 103
degrees. It was also the fourth day out of six to surpass 100 degrees,
and the other two days topped out at 98 and 97 degrees. The average
temperature during this six-day stretch was almost 14 degrees above
the mean. Nearby, both Baoji and Yuncheng reached 101 degrees on
Thursday and on Friday. In each of these three cities, June's average
daily high is in the middle to upper 80s.
