Hanoi, Vietnam, suffered through another day of oppressive heat
and humidity Thursday. The capital city sweltered with temperatures
reaching the upper 90s, dew points ranging from the upper 70s to the
lower 80s and hardly any wind. These factors yielded a top AccuWeather
RealFeel Temperature (tm) of 126 degrees. On Wednesday, this index
peaked at 127 degrees, and on Wednesday night, it never dipped below
100.
It's been unusually hot for almost a week now in a small part of
eastern China encompassing the provinces of Shaanxi and Shanxi.
Thursday, the city of Xi'an soared to 103 degrees making it the third
day out of five to surpass 100 degrees, and the other two days topped
out at 98 and 97 degrees. The average temperature during this five-day
stretch was about 12 degrees above the mean. Nearby, both Baoji and
Yuncheng reached 101 degrees on Thursday. In each of these three
cities, June's average daily high is in the middle to upper 80s.
Tropical Storm Mindulle is slowly and steadily gaining strength
over the open Philippine Sea. Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, Mindulle
holds top sustained winds of almost 65 mph about a center which is 485
miles northwest of Yap, Federated States of Micronesia; it is moving
towards the west-southwest at 22 mph. Mindulle is forecast to
strengthen further during the next 48-72 hours with the chance of it
becoming a typhoon good. A heading towards the west and northwest is
projected. Ultimately, the storm could approach northern Luzon Island,
Philippines.
A fierce wind storm belted portions of East Antarctica from the
Princess Astrid Coast to the Prince Olav Coast this midweek. At
Russia's Novolazarevskaya base on the Princess Astrid Coast, sustained
winds blew above 55 mph for more than 30 hours as of Thursday night,
local time. Thursday evening, winds were clocked at 74 mph, or nearly
hurricane-strength. These severe winds came with temperatures varying
from the middle 10s to the lower 20s. On the Prince Olav Coast, winds
were generally 45-65 mph over a 24-hour stretch to Thursday night at
Syowa, a Japanese outpost.
Soaking rains pelted parts of far northeastern India Wednesday to
Thursday. In Agartala, a city only a short distance east of the border
with Bangladesh, rainfall was about 8.4 inches within 24 hours.
Wednesday, a high of 90 degrees at Whitehorse, Yukon Territory,
Canada, was the fifth-straight high of at least 90 degrees; it also
stretched the string of consecutive record-setting marks to five.
Wednesday's previous high was bested by 9 degrees; Monday's was
shattered by 12. Unusual heat has spanned much of northwestern Canada
since the latter half of last week.
