June 22, 2004 5:15 p.m.

A northern heat wave goes on in Canada. Yukon Territory,
especially, has broken -- indeed, smashed -- daily highs. Monday,
Whitehorse saw its high mark for the date fall by 12 degrees in
reaching 92 degrees. It was the third-straight 90 and the
third-straight record high. Average highs are about 66 degrees.
Dawson, meantime, reached 93 degrees for a second-straight day as the
string of 90-degree afternoons rose to three. Even Old Crow in
northern Yukon topped out 90 degrees Monday.

Vancouver, British Columbia, Monday set a new record daily high
with 83 degrees. Sunday's high of 83 was also a daily record.

Tuesday, what is left of the former Typhoon Dianmu is now an
extra-tropical -- or mid-latitude -- storm over the Sea of Okhotsk.

Monday morning, local time, Tropical Storm Dianmu landed in
southern Japan south of Osaka. The core of the storm brushed eastern
Shikoku before sweeping ashore on Honshu, the main island. Near
landfall on the Kii Peninsula, the Nankishirahama airport clocked
southeasterly gusts of 90 to 110 mph ahead of Dianmu. Gusts topped 80
mph at Tokushima on eastern Shikoku. Farther to the east, afternoon
and evening squalls reaching 50 to 60 mph swept the cities of Nagoya
and Tokyo. Dianmu also brought with it some torrential rains, as
would be expected, but one amount really stood out: Owase, on the Kii
Peninsula, observed 13.6 inches of rain within about 48 hours ended
Monday.

It's been a rainy month thus far on the island of Guam in the
western North Pacific Ocean. Downpours on Monday, local time, left a
rainfall of 3.2 inches. This was the second 3-inch soaking here within
a week. What was more, another 2.4 inches of rain fell Tuesday,
breaking the daily rainfall record. The prior record for June 22 was
1.75 inches in 1972. These new downpours boosted the monthly tally to
14.0 inches whereas the average rainfall for the first 22 days of June
is about 4.1 inches.

Eastern Arabia sweltered even more than usual Tuesday, and the
United Arab Emirates were especially hot. Here, Sharjah soared to 118
degrees while Abu Zaby (Abu Dhabi) and Dubayy (Dubai) were blistered
by 116-degree heat. Average daily highs in June are 102-105 degrees in
these sites. In Oman, Sur and Musqat were nearly as hot with top
readings of 115 and 114 degrees, respectively.

For the second time in three days, meantime, a high of 120 degrees
was set in Sibi, Pakistan, Tuesday. Between these marks, Monday had a
high of 118.

Monday, Reykjavik, the Icelandic capital, was unusually warm. The
high of 69 degrees was well above June's average daily high of 54.
Tuesday's above-average warmth was modest -- the high was 60.
