Late Monday afternoon, EDT, Dianmu is near northern Japan and
weakening quickly. Tropical Storm Dianmu is racing towards the
north-northeast at 36 mph with 40-mph top winds. Within 12 to 18
hours, Dianmu will sweep across northern Japan and into the Sea of
Okhotsk as it loses storm status.
Monday morning, local time, Tropical Storm Dianmu landed in
southern Japan south of Osaka. The core of the storm brushed eastern
Shikoku before sweeping ashore on Honshu, the main island. Near
landfall on the Kii Peninsula, the Nankishirahama airport clocked
southeasterly gusts of 90 to 110 mph ahead of Dianmu. Gusts topped 80
mph at Tokushima on eastern Shikoku. Farther to the east, afternoon
and evening squalls reaching 50 to 60 mph swept the cities of Nagoya
and Tokyo. Dianmu also brought with it some torrential rains, as
would be expected, but one amount really stood out: Owase, on the Kii
Peninsula, observed 13.6 inches of rain within about 48 hours ended
Monday.
A rash of torrential rain linked to, but separate from, Dianmu
swamped South Korea Saturday to early Monday, local time. At Chongju,
rainfall was 13.2 inches. Nearly one foot of rain washed Taejon.
Along the east coast near Kangnung, amounts to at least one foot were
registered.
Far-western Canada has been unusually hot of late. In Yukon
Territory, Whitehorse Friday missed a record high by one degree with
88, then set two-straight record highs, 91 and 90 degrees Saturday
and Sunday, respectively. Dawson reached 89, 91 and 93 degrees on the
three respective days. Faro and Mayo Sunday topped out 92 degrees.
In British Columbia, Vancouver's high of 83 degrees Sunday was a new
daily record. Inland, Lytton reached 100, and in the northwest,
Terrace high 98.
In northeastern India, torrential rains ending Monday amounted to
8.4 inches within 24 hours at Gaya.
It's been a rainy month thus far on the island of Guam in the
western North Pacific Ocean. Downpours on Monday, local time, left a
rainfall of 3.2 inches. This was the second 3-inch soaking here within
a week and raised the monthly tally to 11.6 inches. The average
rainfall for the first 21 days of June is about 3.9 inches.
A small part of east-central China has sweltered in recent days.
At Xi'an, for example, Monday's temperature soared to 103 degrees
after a high of 101 was registered on Sunday. June's average daily
high in this city is 87 degrees. Nearby, Baoji set a high of 101
degrees on both days.
