Sunday afternoon, EDT, Typhoon Dianmu was moving quickly
northeastward toward Japan's Shikoku Island. At midafternoon, the
storm was centered about 500 miles southwest of Tokyo and moving
north-northeast at about 20 mph. Top sustained winds were 75 mph and
with further weakening, the storm will probably soon be downgraded to
a tropical storm The projected path is across Shikoku and southern
Honshu into the Sea of Japan.
As the center of Dianmu passed just east of Okinawa on Saturday
night, wind gusts to 60 mph were recorded at the two reporting
stations on the island, Naha and Kadena.
Torrential rain swamped much of South Korea on Saturday. Chongju
received 5.2 inches of rain by the end of the day. Between two and
five inches fell over most other parts of the country.
Parts of Bangladesh were also hit by excessive rainfall on
Saturday. Over half a foot of rain drenched Cox's Bazar, no doubt
leading to serious flooding.
A rare tornado swept through the small village of Sunlu, Turkey,
about 20 miles north of the capital, Ankara, on Saturday. The
storm damaged at least 45 buildings while causing at least 3 deaths
and 21 injuries.
