HEADLINES:
Echoes Of Summer Of 1992 Continue; Series Of Disturbances Trigger Torrential
Rains, Severe Weather Across Much Of Midwest And Northeast During the Next Ten
Days
EXPECTED NORTH AMERICA SEVERE OR EXTREME WEATHER NEXT 24 HOURS:
strong to severe thunderstorms (see SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK below). But in a
congealed state on Monday and Tuesday, expect the formative low and frontal structure
to "do a number" on the Corn Belt and Mid-Atlantic states. The GFS version is
again experiencing convective feedback issues, so the relative small,
MCC-like corridor of intense convection presented by that scheme is probably in
error. The RGEM equation has an excellent handle on the development of what appears
to be a small mid-latitude cyclone that tracks from KS into N IL then to SE
NY on Day 3. As has been the case so many times in May and June, a dual threat
for both supercell or bowed cumulonimbi and torrential rains will be present
as this feature moves in the general direction of New England by the 72 hour
time frame.
Mesoscale cold pools may also initiate convection over the Gulf Coast today
and the Southeast on Monday. With high dewpoints present beneath the cooled
layers, a highly unstable, diurnal/seabreeze reaction could favor waterspouts and
cloudbursts in parts of Dixie. A broad weakness covering the western third of
the nation will diminish in coverage by Tuesday, easing the threat for
high-based cumulonimbi with elevation-dependent hail and lightning strikes with
little rain. The remnant energy may create new problems in the longer term over
the south central states (see MEDIUM RANGE OUTLOOK below).
