Saturday afternoon, EDT, the center of Typhoon Dianmu was passing
just to the east of Okinawa. Wind gusts of 50 mph and above were
sweeping sheets of torrential rain over the island. Dianmu is
weakening, but still has sustained winds near 100 mph. Currently
moving almost due north, Dianmu is expected to turn a bit to the
northeast with a possible landfall on Japan's southern island of
Kyushu on Sunday night, EDT.
A frosty chill settled over the hinterland of Queensland early
Saturday. Well within the tropics, the outback mining town of Mount
Isa in northwestern Queensland set a low of 31 degrees, or 20 degrees
below average. In the hills of the Great Dividing Range west of
Brisbane, Oakey registered 26 degrees.
Thursday and Friday afternoons were unusually hot over
northwestern Canada. In Yukon Territory, Whitehorse Friday tied its
record daily high with 88 degrees. Dawson topped out 89 degrees, or
nearly 20 degrees above average. Along the chill shores of the
Beaufort Sea, the high of 80 degrees was nearly 35 degrees above
average at Komakuk Beach. Neighboring Northwest Territories shared in
the summery heat: highs to 93 degrees were set in the southwest, and
the high of 85 degrees at Inuvik, above the Arctic Circle, was 20
degrees above average.
A rare tornado swept through the small village of Sunlu, Turkey,
about 20 miles north of the capital, Ankara, on Saturday. The
storm damaged at least 45 buildings while causing at least 3 deaths
and 21 injuries.
