June 18, 2004 6:03 p.m.

Big, powerful Typhoon Dianmu is plodding northwestwards over the
open Philippine Sea. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, Dianmu holds
highest sustained winds of nearly 145 mph and top gusts of between
170 and 175 mph. The eye of Dianmu is 335 miles southeast of
Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The storm is bearing towards the northwest
at 13 mph. Within the next 24 to 36 hours, the typhoon is forecast to
begin a broad, slow turn towards the right that would bring the
storm's eye near or even over the northern Ryukyu Islands of Japan.
Later, a landfall over the southwestern mainland of Japan could
happen.

Now that the rains of summer have begun over most of the Indian
Subcontinent, this week's torrential rainfall should come as no
surprise. Amounts from the last two days have been highest along the
Himalayan foothills and over the northern plains of India. At Dehra
Dun, India, rainfall over two days was 8.0 inches. Gorakhpur picked
up 7.4 inches. Meantime, rains have been heavy of late in a separate
area of western India with Mumbai (Bombay) taking in 6.6 inches over
two days.

Sustained winds Friday were clocked above 75 mph in Mawson
station, East Antarctica. Temperatures at the time were near 20
degrees.

In Ad Dawhah (Doha), Qatar, Friday's morning low was only 94
degrees. This hot night was sandwiched between Thursday's high of 112
degrees and Friday's maximum of 111. June's daily mean high and low
are 106 and 83 degrees, respectively, here.

Unusually heavy June rains shifted to the southern Balkan
Peninsula Friday after having already washed parts of northwestern
Africa and southernmost Italy. In Greece, rainfall was 2.4 inches at
Kastoria and 1.4 inches in Larissa whereas June's mean rainfalls are
about 1.6 and 1.0 inches, respectively, in these two cities.
