June 17, 2004 5:33 p.m.

Unusually heavy June rains pelted northeastern Algeria, northern
Tunisia and parts of southern Italy this week. In Algeria, rainfall
was 2.9 inches at Tebessa versus the monthly mean of 1.3 inches. Jijel
collected 1.9 inches of rain. Among reporting sites in Tunisia, Beja
was wettest with a rainfall of 3.1 inches. Other rainy standouts here
included Tabarqa with 2.1 inches of rain, Bizerte with 2.0 inches and
Tala with a 1.8-inch dousing. The nearby Italian island of Pantelleria
was drenched by 3.9 inches of rain in only 24 hours Wednesday to
Thursday whereas June's mean rainfall is merely 0.3 of an inch.

Though it has weakened a little and has lost its "super typhoon"
moniker, Dianmu remains a mighty and dangerous typhoon churning the
open Philippine Sea. Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, Dianmu holds
highest sustained winds of 145 mph and top gusts of nearly 175 mph
about an eye which is 600 miles southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The
storm is moving towards the west-northwest at 9 mph. A course towards
the northwest and north is forecast for Dianmu for the next 2-3 days.
On this path, Dianmu will threaten Japan's Ryukyu Islands Saturday and
Sunday.

Yet more rain fell on Ratnagiri, India, early Thursday. This
brings the total rainfall since last Saturday to nearly 21 inches.
Wednesday, another 1.81 inches fell on the already wet city. Rainfall
of more than 3 inches fell in Dehra Dun, India, on Wednesday as the
heavy rains continue for parts of the country.

Thursday continued to see the heat in eastern Russia. Near the
northern China border, temperatures topped out near 90 degrees and
even above in some locations. Normal highs for this time of year are
around the middle to upper 70s. Blagoveshchensk, Russia, saw the high
Thursday top out at 92 degrees, more than 15 degrees above normal.
