Super Typhoon Dianmu is an extreme tropical cyclone over the
Philippine Sea. Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, the eye of Dianmu is
800 miles southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Highest sustained winds
about the eye of Dianmu are reckoned at more than 175 mph and top
gusts are nearly 220 mph; it is drifting towards the north-northwest
at 9 mph. Heading mostly towards the northwest for another two days,
Dianmu could begin buffeting Japan's Ryukyu Islands, including
Okinawa, with squalls by Saturday, local time.
Another three inches of rain drenched Ratnagiri, India, early
Wednesday; thus, since last Saturday, rainfall at this western city
has been about 19 inches. Elsewhere in India, at least eight
inches of rain has pelted Pendra within the last three days.
Wednesday alone, 5.7 inches was collected at Satna.
Wednesday, 24-hour rainfall was 8.4 inches at Nan in northern
Thailand.
Wednesday saw exceptional heat in a small swathe of the Russian
far east. Khularin, near the lower Amur River, reached 97 degrees, or
almost 25 degrees above average.
Wednesday morning, a blizzard with hurricane-strength winds and
single-digit cold gripped the northern Antarctica Peninsula.
Soaking showers and thundery downpours brought record rainfall to
the island of Guam Wednesday. A rainfall of 3.15 inches bested the
old rainfall record for the date which was 2.16 inches in 1989.
It's been an unusually rainy stretch in northeastern Algeria and
northern Tunisia this week. In Tebessa, Algeria, for instance,
rainfall Sunday to Wednesday was 2.75 inches, including a 1.7-inch
thundery soaking on Wednesday. For perspective, the mean June rainfall
here is 1.3 inches. Also rainy has been Jijel, Algeria, where rainfall
was 1.3 inches within 24 hours Tuesday to Wednesday.
