June 15, 2004 4:56 p.m.

Super Typhoon Dianmu is a violent storm still strengthening over
the southern Philippine Sea. Late Tuesday afternoon, EDT, the eye of
Dianmu is 335 miles north-northwest of Yap, Micronesia. Packing
highest sustained winds of 165 mph and top gusts of 200 mph, Dianmu is
plodding towards the north at 8 mph. This big storm is forecast to
stick to a north by northwest bearing over open seas for the next two
to three days.

Monday evening, local time, a high gust of 59 mph was clocked at
Yap owing to the nearby Dianmu, at the time a strong tropical storm.

Rains indirectly linked to Dianmu have washed the island of Palau
in recent days. At Koror, rainfall was 10.0 inches within 78 hours as
of early Wednesday morning, local time.

As of early Tuesday, rainfall since Saturday was nearly 16 inches
at Ratnagiri in western India. The 3.3 inches that washed Mumbai
(Bombay) Tuesday, while comparatively modest, marked the end of the
long winter drought and the onset of the life-giving rains of the
summer monsoon. Eastern India has also seen bountiful rains beginning
at the weekend including a three-day tally of 9.3 inches at
Jagdalpur. Within the 24 hours ended Tuesday, Raipur picked up 6.3
inches.

Tuesday, rainfall at Nong Khai, northern Thailand, was 5.4 inches
over 24 hours, and 6.4 inches within two days. Phitsanulok picked up
6.1 inches within 48 hours.

 In much of China, soaking summer rains begin in earnest in June;
they are known as the "plum rains". Such rains pelted much of eastern
China Monday and Tuesday with 5.1 inches being observed within 24
hours at Hefei.

It's been a warm month so far in southern England. Greater London,
for example, had an average temperature nearly 7 degrees above the
climatological mean through Tuesday. Tuesday's high, as measured at
the Heathrow airport, was 81 degrees whereas an average day in the
middle of June would reach 69. It was also the fourth day of the month
to eclipse the 80-degree mark.

Parts of western Mexico have endured stifling heat in recent days.
At the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula, for example, La
Paz registered highs of 105, 107 and 107 degrees, respectively, on
Saturday, Sunday and Monday. June's average daily high here is 94
degrees. Far to the north on the peninsula and hard against the waters
of the Gulf of California, meanwhile, San Felipe soared to 110 degrees
on Monday.
