June 14, 2004 5:16 p.m.

Typhoon Dianmu is a big and growing storm over the southern
Philippine Sea. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, the core of this sprawling
storm is about 145 miles northwest of Yap, Micronesia. Its highest
sustained winds at 75 mph, Dianmu is drifting towards the
north-northeast at 9 mph. An overall northward drift and continued
strengthening are forecast for the next two to three days; this would
put the big storm over the open Philippine Sea.

Monday evening, local time, gusts topped 55 mph at Yap owing to
the nearby Dianmu.

Koror, Palau, Micronesia, collected 8.0 inches of rain within two
days as of Monday.

Typhoon Chanthu has dissipated following Saturday's landfall in
Vietnam near Qui Nhon. Some of Chanthu's rains have lingered into the
hinterland of Southeast Asia: 4.5 inches of rain washed Ubon
Rachathani in less than a day.

Sunday and Monday, torrential rains inundated western India
southward from Mumbai (Bombay). Ratnagiri picked up 13.5 inches of
rain, much of which fell within about 18 hours ended early Monday.

Sunday, a severe wind storm whipped the open Sahara of Algeria.
At In Salah, steady winds of at least 50 mph, blowing amidst
temperatures above 100 degrees, kicked up thick shrouds of dust.

Southwestern Iberia has lately wilted under a blazing sun. Evora,
Portugal, reached 101 degrees Sunday, which followed Saturday's high
of 99. Monday, Lisbon reached 94 degrees, or a full 20 degrees above
average.

Much of southern England was unusually hot on Monday. London's
Heathrow airport surged to 84 degrees, thereby surpassing the average
high for the date by 16 degrees. Birmingham and Brize Norton each set
a high of 82 degrees whereas the mean daily high was in the middle
60s. Also breaching the 80-degree mark were Waddington, Marham,
Coltishall and Boscombe Down.

Some of southern Chile's tiny, storm-prone islands were pelted by
soaking rains this weekend and early on Monday. The Evangelistas
group of islands collected 7.9 inches of rain within 48 hours ended
Monday morning.

Monday afternoon, strong thunderstorms unleashed 50-mph winds at
Windsor, Ontario, Canada, which lies across the border from Detroit,
Michigan.
