Just a few days ago - on Saturday, Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, was only
97 degrees for an afternoon high. However, Sunday and Monday were the
hottest days of the year so far. Tucked between the eastern shores of
the Red Sea and the Al Hijaz mountain range to the east, Jiddah relies
on a sea breeze from the Red Sea to provide cooling. On Sunday and
Monday, a prolonged downsloping northeasterly wind, blew directly off
the high mountains to the east, causing extreme heat with highs of 117
and 120 degrees, respectively. Another hot day is expected Tuesday,
but stronger northwesterly winds are expected Wednesday allowing
Jiddah to return more toward normal for this time of year. The average
high temperature for late-May and early June is 96 degrees.
Meanwhile, the coldest weather of the year thus far has been
observed this Sunday and Monday over the ice cap of East Antarctica.
The automated weather instruments at the Dome-"C" station registered
temperatures to at least 106 degrees below zero. Russia's manned
Vostok station Monday showed a reading of 103.5 degrees below zero.
The northwestern side of Japan's mainland picked up some heavy
rainfall Sunday and Monday. Rainfall of two to four inches was
plentiful; Wajima collected 4.2 inches.
Australia's remote Macquarie Island Monday was caught up in
fearsome winds Monday. Winds swept over the island at 50 to 70 steady
mph; gusts undoubtedly surged well above hurricane strength. Winds
above 60 mph, linked to the same belt of storms, whipped the southern
headlands of Tasmania.
Brutally hot weather across Pakistan continued to worsen on
Sunday. At Jacobabad, the temperature rocketed to 119 degrees during
the afternoon hours, making it the hot spot of the nation. Nawabshah
was a close second, with a high temperature of 118. Third place for
Sunday's baking contest was taken by Rohri, with a temperature of 117.
All three of these places had recently seen a turn to "cooler"
weather, with temperatures on Thursday and Friday staying just above
110. Late last week, there was an even worse heat wave, with several
locations topping the 120 degree mark. During that heat wave,
Jacobabad was the hottest reporting site in the world on several
occasions.
Extreme heat hit portions of the East Coast of Mexico Sunday.
Veracruz, along the western shores of the Bay of Campeche, singed
with a reading of 104 degrees. Slightly cooler air was felt Monday
with a stronger sea breeze as the high was 95 degrees.
