A swirling area of clouds to the south of Mexico could develop
into a tropical depression or tropical storm within the next couple
of days. A tropical storm has already developed in this area this
season, and this disturbance will have to be watched.
A "white hurricane" racked a stretch of East Antarctica Friday,
and the blizzard raged on into Saturday. The height of the storm
Friday into Friday night lasted more than 12 hours and was marked by
steady winds above 80 mph. Gusts, while not recorded, likely topped
100 mph. Whiteouts and 60-mph winds raged through Saturday. It wasn't
the only blizzard hammering the continent. Farther east, another storm
slamming East Antarctica blasted an automated weather station at
Penguin Point with 65-mph winds at 15 degrees below zero. Yet another
storm, this one off West Antarctica's Antarctic Peninsula unleashed
sustained winds of 50-70 mph over the Esperanza station Friday into
Saturday.
Brutally hot weather across Pakistan continued to worsen on
Sunday. At Jacobabad, the temperature rocketed to 119 degrees during
the afternoon hours, making it the hot spot of the nation. Nawabshah
was a close second, with a high temperature of 118. Third place for
Sunday's baking contest was taken by Rohri, with a temperature of 117.
All three of these places had recently seen a turn to "cooler"
weather, with temperatures on Thursday and Friday staying just above
110. Late last week, there was an even worse heat wave, with several
locations topping the 120 degree mark. During that heat wave,
Jacobabad was the hottest reporting site in the world on several
occasions.
India was also in the clutches of a heat wave Sunday.
Temperatures in several locations reached or surpassed 110 degrees.
Included among these was Jaipur, home to about 1.5 million people.
The nation's capital, New Delhi, with a population of more than 7
million, had a high temperature of 107.
Duststorms swept across parts of the Arabian Peninsula Friday
night. At Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, clouds of dust and sand restricted
visibility to less than 0.2 of a mile.
