Greetings
I was watching the news and reports all days while doing some computer stuff,
laundry, charging the camcorder and more. I new that the low and triple
point (thanks for class Tim Vasquez in 2002) were boring Eastward toward Kansas
and Missouri and Nebraka with possibilities of storms. It seemed a lot like May
4, 2003 in Kansas again but I wondering when would I leave.
A stormchaser friend did not call. Before 4:00 storms were still not firing
and I wondered -would this be a waste day?
However I got all my gear and was on the road by 4:41 as I heard there was a
tornado near Bear Lake on the ground near Atchinson. KS. I headed up I-2keow
as I came into my favorite Faucett, MO truck stop at 6:00. There were warnings
in Platte county, MO . There was tons of rain as I heard that on the radio
they could see rotato above me.
I headed away to get a clear look and headed south on I29 to near Dearborn
and a real nice rest stop where there were many people watching the storm to
the North near Faucett.
Just East of I-29 was a nice wallcloud which was trying its best to lower. To
the West across the highway was the first tornado stretching to the ground.
It was fairly wide but did not last long and I took videos of it while I
watched the news on my portable TV. That #1 tornado dissipated as the wallcloud to
to the West kept brewing and lowering as a big dark cloud. A few tendrils came
out to the side but nothing else.
Meanwhile #2 tornado formed to the West of #1 and it was more like an
elephant truck shape as I kept on videotaping and keeping an eye on the wallcloud to
the East. I took a series of nice videos of this tornado as it lowered , went
back up and then lowered again several times. It was white in color and a
little hard to see but the tornado began coiling and twisting as it went down and
up over several minutes.
I heard there was possible stormed brewing near Faucett again and possibly
Plattburg and North Platt.
Cars were stopped on I-29 heading North as many watched this #2 tornado over
the other rest stop just East of the exit.
Back up to Faucett as there was another wallcloud but it did not do much and
I headed back to Dearborn. There was a KMBC weather truck camped there while
the chopped buzzed over West surveying some damage. A tornado hit Plattsburg
before I could get there.
Things were still firing but it was now dark. I heard spotters could see
tornados to the North near St. Joseph East of that city. It was getting dark and
as I sat in the dark with my blinkers on, a patrolman stopped and asked if I
was okay and I said "yes thanks I was just heading home after stormchasing a
successful day." He wished me luck as I headed back to Olathe, KS.
I got back around 10:30 . What a day!!! The news station KMBC did a great job
and the chopped in the air reports were great. The St. Joe TV channel does a
great job too 105.5 and that is the one I will listen instead of the KC
station I listen too. It was nice to see and hear some of that stuff even as I
drove around and hear what was going on. Unlike May 4 I waited a little bit later
to get started and that helped target my area unlike May 4, 2002 when I caught
a small tornado near the airport but missed the F4 further South.
But this was a great day with 2 tornadoes. Clips and shots will be posted
tonight or early tomorrow morning. Have to spend some time with my kids and maybe
show them the tornadoes later!!
Looking forward to hearing other reports later. What a day !!!!!
