A "white hurricane" racked a stretch of East Antarctica Friday,
and the blizzard raged on into Saturday. The height of the storm
Friday into Friday night lasted more than 12 hours and was marked by
steady winds above 80 mph. Gusts, while not recorded, likely topped
100 mph. Whiteouts and 60-mph winds raged through Saturday. It wasn't
the only blizzard hammering the continent. Farther east, another storm
slamming East Antarctica blasted an automated weather station at
PEnguin Point with 65-mph winds at 15 degrees below zero. Yet another
storm, this one off West Antarctica's Antarctic Peninsula unleashed
sustained winds of 50-70 mph over the Esperanza station Friday into
Saturday.
Pakistan's seasonal heat wave worsened Saturday as temperatures
soared above 110 degrees in most of the nation's lowlands. Hot spots
for the day were Jacobabad and Pad Idan, both of which reached 117
degrees.
Fiery heat has also baked Dongola, Sudan for the past few days.
There, temperatures reached as high as 120 degrees last this past
week.
Duststorms swept across parts of the Arabian Peninsula Friday
night. At Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, clouds of dust and sand restricted
visibility to less than 0.2 of a mile.
