"The United Nations says a cyclone in Burma last week killed at least 140
people and left 18,000 homeless. It is the first news of the disaster,
which was not reported by the national media. A UN statement issued in
Geneva says the storm, which caused tidal surges and flooding in four towns
in southwestern Rakhine State, near the border with Bangladesh, was the
worst to hit the area since 1968. It says the storm damaged or destroyed
schools, telephone and electricity lines and killed livestock."
