May 28, 2004 5:19 p.m.

Eastern Arabia sweltered Friday. In Saudi Arabia, Al Hufuf reached
118 degrees. Abu Dhabi (Abu Zaby), one of the United Arab Emirates,
hit 116 degrees. Along the Gulf of Oman, humidity and apparent
temperatures were heightened by on-shore winds: Al Fujayrah, UAE, had
90 degrees with an 86-degree dewpoint as of mid afternoon thereby
making for an apparent temperature of 120 degrees.

Friday dawned frosty cold in eastern parts of Argentina's Buenos
Aires province. Inland, Azul dipped to 23 degrees and Tandil set a
low of 26. The seaside city of Mar del Plata, meantime, fell to 28
degrees. Average lows in late May are in the lower 40s in each of
these locations.

Parts of the Korean Peninsula were washed by heavy rain Thursday
to Friday. Hardest hit were northern South Korea and southern North
Korea. In South Korea, rainfall was 3.9 inches at Ch'angdong-ni and
2.9 inches in Seoul. In the North, the town of P'yonggang was doused
by 3.6 inches of rain.

Thursday, the temperature dipped 101 degrees below zero at the
Dome C Automatic Weather Station set high on the ice cap of East
Antarctica.

Soaking rains have lately hit parts of Indonesia. On the island of
Java (Jawa), in the 72 hours to early Thursday, local time, rainfall
was about 13.2 inches at Cilacap. Thundery downpours, meanwhile,
unloaded 6.5 inches of rain within 24 hours as of early Friday at
Ketapang, southwestern Borneo.

Three-day rainfall ended midday Thursday, local time, was 7.6
inches at Port Blair on South Andaman, one of India's Andaman Islands
set in the southeastern Bay of Bengal.

Northwesterly winds heated South Africa's southern shores
Thursday. Whereas average high temperatures in this part of May are
generally in the 60s to lower 70s, Thursday's top marks were widely in
the 80s, and there were hotter spots still. Port Elizabeth and Cape
Saint Francis both soared to 92 degrees while East London spiked to
91. Even during the height of summer, these locations only have mean
highs in the middle and upper 70s.
