Note: I was working on this report Wednesday & Thursday. However, in
attempting to post from my webtv address to VA StormNet, Yahoo! felt it
was necessary to delay the e-mail I sent from webtv _3 hours_, even
directly to the message page. I switched my VA StormNet e-mail posting
address to my Yahoo! addy, & items appeared within 5 minutes. Other non
MSN based messages also appeared without delay. When I accidentally sent
from my webtv address to VA StormNet, Yahoo! was quick to remind me I
posted from the wrong address. Wish MSN & Yahoo! would fix this problem
.

3:17am Friday
Winchester VA
Just a quick mote on last Friday mesoscale thunderstorm that swept thru
here locally last Friday. It was one most damaging storms, at least in
town, in over a year. My winds only gusted to 34 mph & I had no damage
to show for it. However numerous trees & power lines fell, & I saw
several fallen trees in the Pleasant Valley Rd area. Two of the were
Bradford Pears, with circumferences of about 4 & 6 inches each, cleanly
broken off above the root line. Bradfords are very vulnerable to wind
damage. I saw more wind damage from last Friday then I did w/ Isabel
last fall. Allegheny Power reported 3,800 without power from the storm
here, with full restoration not until Sunday afternoon.
I counted over 600 total warnings (severe thunderstorm, tornado & flash
flood) nationwide in 24 hours ending 3am last Saturday. There was 25
tornadoes reported, 296 wind damage, & 244 hail reports.
Locally, Baltimore/Washington issued 17 severe thunderstorm warnings,
(2 that morning) & 2 flash flood warnings. Blacksburg issued 13 severe
thunderstorm warnings, all in the afternoon & evening. Wakefield issued
1 severe thunderstorm warning.

Tue 5-25:
A broken line of thunderstorms moved east of the mountains about 5pm. A
few of the cells rotated, & dropped tornadoes. Two buildings in the
Hagerstown MD area were destroyed by tornado/wind damage. Large hail &
wind damage were common in the paths of t-storms that did form. A funnel
cloud was spotted by the public (several reports) in the area of The
Mixing Bowl, (where Interstates 395, 495 & 95 merge). The area is near
Springfield VA, or about 30 miles south of Washington DC.
According to the AWS station at N Hagerstown (MD) High School, winds
gusted to 67 mph, & .87" of rain fell. The peak rate was 5.12" per hour!
WHAG tv reported near 5,000 in the dark after the storms in Washington &
Frederick counties MD. WJLA tv reported 69,278 without power in metro
Washington after Tuesday's storms.
I missed the storms entirely locally, with nothing more than sprinkles.
After quick clearing, a spectacular cumulus nimbus could be seen to my
25 miles to my northeast. It was 10 miles high, & producing 1.75" hail
in the Charles Town WV area at 6:20pm (see album).
In the 24 hours ending at 1am Wednesday, there were about 225 warnings
nationwide. Locally, Baltimore/Washington issued 6 tornado warnings, 8
for severe thunderstorms, and a flash flood warning. Wakefield issued 1
severe thunderstorm warning. Blacksburg issued 2 for severe
thunderstorms & 1 for flash flood.
In looking for information many sources failed miserably. The newspapers
in Frederick MD, Loudoun Co, Culpeper, Charlottesville, Richmond &
Norfolk failed to have any current storm information on page one of
their search engines. I was impressed with coverage from Hagerstown MD
though.
=======
Thur 5/27:
A few heavy thunderstorms ahead of the main cluster, but we missed these
too. One thunderstorm passed about 10 miles to my north & had a vivid
show of lightning. The general area of rain behind it is weakening, and
so far we have only managed .04" early this am.

I will be working on end of the month report next week. Washington
meteorolgists have said that we are now the 2nd warmest May on record.
And for the 1st time in what seems like a decade, a decent Memorial Day
weekend weatherwise. In many years, it seems to rain and/or be only
about 60. After the rain exits today, we won't have a rain threat until
later Monday afternoon.
