Thursday, the temperature dipped 101 degrees below zero at the
Dome C Automatic Weather Station set high on the ice cap of East
Antarctica.
Soaking rains have lately hit parts of Indonesia's island of Java
(Jawa). In the 72 hours to early Thursday, local time, rainfall was
about 13.2 inches at Cilacap.
Three-day rainfall ended midday Thursday, local time, was 7.6
inches at Port Blair on South Andaman, one of India's Andaman Islands
set in the southeastern Bay of Bengal.
Northwesterly winds heated South Africa's southern shores
Thursday. Whereas average high temperatures in this part of May are
generally in the 60s to lower 70s, Thursday's top marks were widely in
the 80s, and there were hotter spots still. Port Elizabeth and Cape
Saint Francis both soared to 92 degrees while East London spiked to
91. Even during the height of summer, these locations only have mean
highs in the middle and upper 70s.
The northern portions of Libya continue to see strong winds as a
storm moves eastward over the area Thursday. Visibilities continued
to hover near 1-2 miles with winds sustained at nearly 25 mph. Late
on Wednesday, visibilities at Benina dropped to 1/16th of a mile in
the blowing dust.
Temperatures in much of northern India and Pakistan continue to
be above normal. This is mainly due to the lack of rainfall over the
area. Temperatures in Nagpur, India climbed to 112 on Thursday, more
than 10 degrees above the normal high for the area. The area
continues to see above normal heat as temperatures for much of the
region climbed into the upper 90s to the lower 110s.
