Searing heat Wednesday baked the eastern Sahara. Temperatures
above 110 degrees were reached over a wide swathe of southern Egypt
and northern Sudan. By mid afternoon, Kharga, Egypt, seared at 119
degrees as Dongola, Sudan, registered 116. Elsewhere, Luxor, Egypt,
and Wadi Halfa, Sudan, hit 115.

High winds along the eastern shores of Libya kicked up dust
storms Tuesday and again Wednesday. Baninah, near Banghazi, clocked
winds of 40-50 mph and visibility down to a few hundred yards each
day.

Unusually hot weather baked parts of South Africa Wednesday. In
the southwest, 95 degrees was reached at Vredendal, and Langebaanweg
topped out at 90. The average late May highs in these two sites are
in the lower 70s and upper 60s, respectively.

Wednesday, summery warmth surged northward from the Caspian Sea
and Kazakhstan to much of western Russia near the Ural Mountains. It
was warmest with respect to climatology immediately to the west of the
Urals. Here, high temperatures in the lower and middle 80s were
widespread. Topping the list of warm spots were Ust' Kulom at 85
degrees and Troitsko Pechorsk with an 84-degree top reading. These
marks were about 25 degrees above average for late May.

In Cilacap, island of Java (Jawa), Indonesia, 72-hour rainfall
ended Wednesday morning, local time, was 9.0 inches.
