Greetings all
I got out of teaching at 3:30 in Kansas City, KS and headed towards the
airport after grabbing fast food (two chicken sandwiches cheap meals for the day if
you really want me to be specific. I was hungry for food but also some good
storms.
I watched my mobile TV and there were storms brewing in Northeast Missouri. I
got off at Barry Road before the airport and tried to target Northeast of St.
Joseph through I-29 after the airport.
I was a little too late trying to catch the storm so I decided to go east on
I-36 and head up I-35 North to go around the storm instead of trying to
approach the town of Albany on 136 off of 169 . I should have gone through 169 as it
would have possibly saved me the time I needed.
There was some rain, no hail and the sky was a little dark. As I was was 10
minutes near Bethany (east of Albany) I heard that a tornado had hit the town
(actually later 2) and had decimated the local Hyvee store. I heard from
reports that the sky got dark, the sky got green and then the tornado hit. No one
was hurt and I did not want to ogle the damage. I had already missed the
Chillocothe storms .
Storms were possibly brewing near Topeka and Lawrence so I headed back to
Olathe. I called my kids in Lawrence and there were under a tornado warning and
saw a wallcloud in the area. One cell was heading toward Olathe and one toward
Gardner -Edgerton and the Ottawa area. I headed down I-35 and then set up on
I-7 near 128 st on a ridge.
The clouds were rolling in from the West from Lawrence and I started
videotaping looing West at the rising cloud formations. The sky was clearer in the
West and South with anvil type storms rising up. Then it started pouring raining
as I videotaped- a real warm rain. The lightning was pinking and quite
striking and the water was coming down in buckets.
I headed back to Olathe and got back around 8 by going South then East to
watch the rest of the reports as the storms raced East.
Later I heard that there was a wallcloud around were I was so maybe I caught
it coming on the video which I will have to check. It was raining so hard I
don't know how someone could see it. There was a bigger tornado South of Topeka
I head but no other reports.
I am looking forward to teaching during JUne after I get out of school on
June 4 so I can watch more storms and not kids :)
If there are any other people in the Kansas City area that might want to
chase sometime, email me or telephone me.
Close is only good with horseshoes but hopefully better targets, roads,
storms to come.
I will look at my video to see about those storms. Meanwhile if it is clear
try to look for the bright comets NEAT Q4 and Linear T7. ? let me know
