Another day and another dose of 115-degree heat over Oman. Suhar,
along the northern shore, registered a fiery 119 degrees. Far inland,
Fahud observed 116 degrees. In nearby United Arab Emirates, Al
Fujayrah also topped out near 115 degrees.
It's been a rainy stretch on Itbayat, a small northern island in
the Philippines. Since Friday, rainfall has been 16.5 inches
following another outpouring of about four inches.
The week began unusually wet over northern Algeria. At Algiers,
rainfall was 2.6 inches with 24 hours ended Tuesday. All of May, on
average, sees about 1.8 inches of rain.
Late Monday, a chilling soaker of a rain wound down over the
western edge of Argentina's fertile Pampas. At Rio Cuarto, rainfall
was 5.3 inches within about two and one-half days.
High winds buffeted southernmost Patagonia, both Chile and
Argentina, Monday. Winds gusted above 70 mph at Punta Arenas, Chile.
In Kuwait City, Tuesday's heat was quite dry with afternoon
relative humidities generally less than 10%. At one point, a
temperature of 106 degrees was observed with a dew point of 1 degree,
thereby yielding a relative humidity of merely 2%.
Australia's Casey base, on the shores of East Antarctica, withstood
severe winds Tuesday. Sustained winds howled 50-75 mph for ten hours
or more with temperatures in the 20s. The high winds whipped around
snow, cutting the visibility as low as 1/16 of a mile.
A strong North Atlantic storm brought high winds to parts of
southern Greenland Tuesday. At Prins Christian, steady winds blew
35-55 mph for at least twelve hours. Sustained winds climbed steadily
at Narsarsuaq reaching more than 45 mph late in the day.
Monday to Tuesday saw soaking rains struck parts of western Spain.
In Caceres, rainfall was 3.2 inches within 24 hours.
