"BELLEVILLE Hail the size of golf balls smashed parts of Republic County
Monday afternoon as tornadoes hovered overhead. Some of the 30 or more
twisters touched down, but little damage was reported from
them. Belleville was hit hard by hail, Mayor Brad Chatfield said. “It’s
mainly hail damage, golf-ball size, and it’s pretty much the entire city,”
he said.
He reported nearly an inch of rain and large hail that broke out windows
and windshields. The Christian Church in Belleville will figure in the
damage. Winds in excess of 60 mph picked up eight or more stock tanks from
Hays Lumber.
Earlier Monday evening, Brad and Pam Chatfield photographed a tornado
dipping out of the clouds near their home about five blocks south of
downtown Belleville. Tree leaves and hail stones littered their back porch."
