"Wet snow and blustery north winds blasted much of Montana Wednesday,
knocking out stoplights and sending vehicles skittering down slushy highways.
A day after most of the state enjoyed sunshine and warm temperatures,
Montana was hit with a winter storm that blanketed portions of the state
with snow and forced highway closures.
Thousands of customers along the Hi-Line were without power at times on
Wednesday, said NorthWestern Energy spokeswoman Claudia Rapkoch. At least
14 distribution poles were toppled, and between nine and 10 transmission
structures also were knocked out because of the weather. There also were
some cable television and radio interruptions around northcentral Montana.
The storm forced the closure of a portion of Interstate 15 between Helena
and Great Falls, along with at least two other highways, and was being
blamed for a close call for one highway patrolman.
The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for a large
portion of western and northwestern Montana and winter weather advisories
for much of the rest of the state. As much as 8 inches of snow was
expected in the mountains, the weather service said.
