April 28, 2004 5:46 p.m.

Heralding the oncoming summer rains, downpours Wednesday
selectively doused heat-weary Thailand. Many dropped one to four
inches of rain, and Khon Kaen picked up a quick 5.3 inches. Bangkok
was cooled by clouds more than rain, although there were
thundershowers about; it was cooler by day than it had been Tuesday
night, when stifling humidity held apparent temperatures in the 90s
and 100s.

Heat early this week has become intense over the southern Arabian
Peninsula. Tuesday and Wednesday, Oman saw a high of 111 degrees at
the Fahud oil field. Sohar hit 113 degrees Wednesday afternoon.

Tuesday into Wednesday, generous rains soaked the southern
hinterland of Queensland, Australia. Charleville picked up 2.5 inches
of rain, thereby besting the monthly mean rainfall by 1.5 inches.

Vostok station, Antarctica, its low 97 degrees below zero and
day-time temperatures in the mid -90s, Wednesday had its coldest day
of the year thus far. Wednesday night, the temperature dipped at 98
degrees below zero.

Unusual warmth Tuesday bathed much of Canada's Great Plains for a
second-straight day. Estevan, Saskatchewan, set a daily record high
with 82 degrees. Regina hit 80 degrees, or 25 degrees above average.
Meantime, a strong norther swept through much of the plains Tuesday
afternoon and overnight. Northerly winds gusted 40 to 50 mph in
Alberta and western Saskatchewan, and by daybreak, Wednesday,
temperatures were as much as 45 degrees lower than the maximums set
Tuesday.

Gusty thunderstorms swept through central and northern Pakistan
this midweek. In Lahore, thunderstorms soon after sunrise Wednesday
unleashed wind gusts to 50 mph. At the same time, sustained winds were
nearly 45 mph in a thunderstorm in Islamabad. Thunderstorms returned
to Islamabad overnight Wednesday night bringing sustained winds
slightly above 45 mph.

Soaking rains have lately pelted a small part of New Zealand's
North Island. In Tauranga, rainfall was 8.1 inches from Monday night
to early Thursday morning, local time.
