Tuesday, Southeast Asia, notably much of Myanmar (Burma) and
Thailand, sweltered as they have most of April. Northwestern
Thailand was one of the hottest areas with highs of 107 degrees at
Mae Hong Son and Mae Sariang. Elsewhere, highs of 100 to 105 degrees
were widespread. Bangkok, which set a maximum of 99, registered
apparent temperatures above 115 degrees thanks to stifling humidity.
In Myanmar, the city of Yangon registered a high of 106 degrees,
about 10 degrees above the already lofty average high. Yangon has
reached at least 104 degrees on eight-straight days.
Tuesday, blistering heat toasted both sides of the Pakistan-
India border. In Pakistan, Nawabshah hit 113 degrees for a second-
straight day. The state of Rajasthan, India, saw 112 at Jaisalmer, and
111 at Bikaner.
The southern Arabian Peninsula has been quite hot lately, too.
Tuesday, a temperature of 111 degrees was registered at the Fahud oil
field in Oman.
Monday and Tuesday, cold, soaking rains washed the eastern shores
of the Korean Peninsula. In South Korea, Kangnung picked up 5.9
inches of rain within little more than 24 hours. Changjon, North
Korea, collected 4.0 inches of rain.
The storm that washed Korea also pelted Japan with moderate and
heavy rains. Rainfall on Tsushima, the islands between Korea and
southwestern Japan, was 6.9 inches.
Northwestern Mexico, right to the Pacific coast, sweltered early
this week. Monday, Mexicali and San Felipe soared to 102 degrees
versus average highs for the date in the upper 80s. The oceanside
city of Tijuana spiked to 97 degrees, or about 25 degrees above
average. Tuesday, Tijuana rose to 91 degrees before a cooling onshore
breeze began to blow.
Early Tuesday, heavy thunderstorms unleashed excessive rainfall
over Tegucigalpa, Honduras. This capital city was pelted by 3.1 inches
of rain within six hours and 3.5 inches overall. The mean April
rainfall here is about 1.3 inches.
