Withering heat Monday stood out once again over much of Myanmar
(Burma) and Thailand as one of earth's top news stories. Northwestern
Thailand hosted highs of 108 degrees at Mae Hong Son and Mae Sariang.
Elsewhere, highs of 100 to 105 degrees were widespread. Bangkok,
while coming up one degree shy of 100, registered apparent
temperatures between 110 and 115 degrees. In Myanmar, the city of
Yangon observed 107 degrees, fully 10 degrees above the already lofty
average high. Farther north, the maximum reading was 109 degrees at
Meiktila and Mandalay.
Excessive heat was also observed in Pakistan and northwestern
India Monday. Pakistan saw 113 degrees at Nawabshah, and 112 at Pad
Idan. India registered 110 at Jaisalmer and Jadhpur.
A spring-time blizzard Sunday and Sunday night smacked eastern
Newfoundland, Canada. At Gander, snowfall of 18 inches was driven
about by winds of 40-50 mph.
Winds gusting between 50 and 60 mph rocked Nagasaki, Japan,
Sunday night, local time.
Soaking rains, meanwhile, pelted much of the Korean Peninsula
Monday. The heaviest rains poured down upon southern South Korea and
nearby islands where rainfalls of 1-3 inches were common within just
12 hours. Some higher tallies were recorded in the Korea Strait. Here,
rainfall was 4.1 inches at Sogwip'o, island of Cheju, South Korea, and
5.0 inches at Izuhara, Tsushima, Japan, with both rainfalls within 12
hours.
The week has begun unusually warm in Portugal. The national
capital, Lisbon, on Monday set a second-straight high of 83 degrees
whereas an average day at this time of the year would peak in the
middle 60s. Indeed, even the warmest part of the year, mid August,
only has an average high near 80 degrees here.
