In sweltering Southeast Asia, Bangkok, Thailand, Sunday reached
100 degrees for the 12th time this month; the high was 100
degrees. The month of April thus far has been hotter than average
by 4.5 degrees. To make it worse, April is usually the hottest month
of the year. In April of 2003, only one day experienced a high
temperature of 100 degrees. Elsewhere in Thailand, Sunday saw another
exceptional hot day as temperatures soared into the 90s and lower
100s. Chiang Mai, in northwestern Thailand, hit a high temperature
of 104 degrees on Sunday.
On Sunday, Nawabshath, Pakistan had a high temperature of 111
degrees, but not as hot as Saturdays high temperature of 113
degrees.
Soaking rains Friday and Saturday washed a small swath of
southeastern Australia. Along the southern foot of the Australian
Alps in Victoria, 36-hour rainfall was 6.4 inches at Bairnsdale, and
5.4 inches at Sale.
An abundant amount of tropical moisture is crossing the northern
tier of Brazil on westward to Guyana in South America. Since mid-
Saturday morning, 3.23 inches of rain had fallen in Cayenne, French
Guiana and an additional 2.72 inches of rain fell during the
afternoon hours. In Belem, Brazil, rainfall totals as of Saturday
were at 1.38" and Sao Luis, Brazil had received 3.35" of rain by mid-
Saturday morning, with an additional 1.06 inches in the afternoon.
