In sweltering Southeast Asia, Bangkok, Thailand, Saturday reached
100 degrees for the eleventh time this month; the high was 101
degrees. As of Thursday, this April thus far had been hotter than
average by 4.5 degrees, April usually being the hottest month of the
year. Elsewhere in Thailand, Saturday saw exceptional heat in the far
northwest: 108 degrees at Mae Sariang, and 107 at Mae Hong Son. In
neighboring Myanmar, Yangon surged to at least 100 degrees for the
eighteenth time so far this month; 105 was Saturday's high. Given the
mean monthly high of 96, it is already hot enough on average, let
alone this sweltering April, 2004.
But it's a dry heat! That may well be, but with the mercury
showing 113 degrees at mid afternoon, Nawabshah, Pakistan, was no
place for a walk in the sun. Also in the area, Chhor topped out 111
degrees, and Hyderabad, 110.
Soaking rains Friday and Saturday washed a small swathe of
southeastern Australia. Along the southern foot of the Australian
Alps in Victoria, 36-hour rainfall was 6.4 inches at Bairnsdale, and
5.4 inches at Sale.
In central Turkey, the town of Kirsehir reported 6.7 inches of
rain within 12 hours as of late Friday morning, local time. If
accurate, the downpour is nearly five-fold the average rainfall here
for all of April.
