"More than 300 persons had a providential escape when a tent erected for a
Christian prayer meeting at the Palace Grounds crashed due to rains and
strong winds that slammed the City on Thursday night.
Rains and winds wrought havoc in other parts of Bangalore too. More than 40
trees were uprooted and huge branches of over 150 trees got chipped, as a
result power supply lines snapped and roads were blocked.
Meteorology department officials said the rains were caused due to the
combination of anti-cyclonic flow from the Bay of Bengal (from the West)
and the cool air from the East. "Such rains are always associated with
thunders and lightning," Department Director Dr A L Koppar said. He said
that the City may receive light rains during evening hours on Friday.
As many as eight persons died in a hailstorm in different parts of the
State on Wednesday and Thursday. Shockingly, a girl died from snake bite
after the reptile entered her house along with rainwater. Many cattle also
died when lightning struck them.
Four persons died in Gulbarga in the last 48 hours, two brothers died at
Nelmangal in Bangalore Urban district, two died in Mysore.
In Gulbarga district, one person died on Thursday while three others died
on Wednesday. Chandrama Balagundappa (21), who was working in the fields at
Konchur village near Chittapur, died when lightning struck on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Hanumantaraya (35) and his son Naganna (10) died when
lightning struck them at Hundekal in Vadgera police limits in Shahapur
taluk. As many as 11 sheep also died due to lightning. Mallikarjun Kurabar
(35) and two of his buffalos died in Belgera village."
