"The floodwaters have cut 911 telephone services in Elkins; residents there
can call within the town, but can't call out to Fayetteville. A work-around
is in place: Elkins residents requesting emergency help can dial 911 and be
connected with the Elkins Fire Department. Officers there will then use
radios to call a dispatch operator in Fayetteville. The high water is
causing extensive damage throughout the northwest part of the state.
In Goshen, the White River has flooded its banks, with water levels high
enough touch the rooflines of some homes. Residents were out Saturday
filling and placing sandbags around homes and garages.
Several homes have been flooded in Elkins. And large portions of West Fork,
Winslow and the outlying areas of Washington County are also underwater.
Between two and three more inches of rain are expected in Arkansas this
weekend, expected to further saturate already flooded areas of the state.
The storms that moved through Arkansas earlier this week have prompted two
northern counties to declare emergencies because of flooding.
The state Department of Emergency Management said Franklin and Washington
counties will be eligible for state assistance after they are approved.
Heavy storms deluged parts of Arkansas and spawned at least one tornado.
National Weather Service forecasters sent a survey team to southwest
Washington County Friday to investigate the reported tornado. Forecasters
said the tornado apparently touched down near Morrow and moved east toward
West Fork, damaging some trees and a chicken house."
