Winchester (nw) VA

For those interested, here are some news links of the tornadoes that
swept thru IL & IN on Tuesday night. The SPC website noted about 50
tornadoes Tuesday night. Of course some were counted more than once as
they advanced east/ northeast.

On of the IN tornadoes passed a few miles from my brother's home, but
caused no damage there. He was not home when it passed by. There was
damage in town, but sounded minor, as tornado damage goes. It was only
the 13th verified tornado in his county since 1950.

On Wednesday, there were 20 reports of hail 1.75" or larger, mostly in
OK & AR. There was 2 reports of 3" hail. And there was 3 reports of hail
covering the ground. The most spectacular report was of Quarter size
hail, 3" deep, 7 miles east of Stillwater OK.

While the Midwest has been dealing w/ severe weather, the Mid Atlantic
has finally warmed up. Last week, we had 2" of cold rain that has erased
the year to date deficit.

Temperatures rose to around 80 last weekend, then soared to the 90º
mark for the 1st time this season Monday in many areas.

24 hour high/low ending 8am Tue for Baltimore/ Washington CWA

3pm Monday Temps

Although it is early in the year for 90º heat here, it was even warmer
on other years, so no records were set. From the daily climate
summaries, these stations were within 3º of the daily record high.

BWI, Baltimore MD L54 H93

Elkins WV L43 H82

Richmond VA L62 H90

Washington Dulles (VA) L61 H90

Washington National (VA) L60 H91

My high of 90 was 1º short of the daily record, set Easter Monday in
1976. WINC radio had a high of 91, but does not keep daily records.

Last year, a very wet & cold spring delayed the 1st 90º day until July
5th!

This week, temperatures still have made to the 80º mark each day since
(early June normals). They will return normal highs Saturday, and fall
into the 60's next week. Norrmals this week are in the high in the upper
60s & low in the mid 40s.

We had our first thundershower of the season about 9pm Tuesday. It
brought 2/10" of rain & a refreshing breeze.

We should get more showers & thunderstorms tonight thru Friday night as
the next cold front works eastward.

Steve Minghini
