Soaking rains pelted parts of northern Dominican Republic this
midweek. The coastal city of Puerto Plata, for example, was doused by
5.5 inches of rain within 24 hours ended Thursday morning. Further
inland, Santiago collected about 2.8 inches of rain during the same
period of time.
Cloudbursts broke over greater Jakarta, island of Java (Jawa),
Indonesia, Wednesday to early Thursday, local time. Three observations
from within and around the city showed rainfall of 3.5-5.0 inches.
Heavy thunderstorms and showers washed parts of northeastern
Argentina and Uruguay Wednesday to Thursday. Rainfall as of Thursday
afternoon was 6.7 inches within about 18 hours at Reconquista,
Argentina. Parana, meanwhile, was drenched by 3.8 inches of rain, and
nearer to the Uruguay line, rainfall was about 3.7 inches at
Gualeguaychu. Within Uruguay, rainfall was 5.0 inches at Mercedes and
almost 3.4 inches in Paso de los Toros.
Much of Asia's Pacific Rim is seeing temperatures well above normal.
For example, Tokyo, Japan, had a high of 84 degrees Thursday, nearly 20
degrees higher than the average high of 65 degrees. This heat was also
shown in Hong Kong which saw its first high of 90 degrees this
year. The normal high for this time of year is in the upper 70s.
Much of northern Russia continues to see cold temperatures of
more than 20 degrees below normal. Low temperatures of 22 degrees
below zero occurred early Thursday morning in Saskylakh, Russia. The
normal low is near 0 degrees with the normal high near 20 degrees.
The cold snap is keeping much of northern Russia 10-20 degrees below
normal.
