A severe winter-like storm Tuesday and Wednesday belted Russia's
Pacific rim. Eastern Sakhalin Island was buried beneath heavy snows,
by some reckonings, three to four feet of wind-whipped snow at
Pogranichnoye. The Kuril Islands stretched between Kamchatka and
northern Japan were battered by gales, snows and cold rains.
Wednesday, sustained winds above 60 mph raked the southern tip of
Kamchatka at Ozernaya; snow blew in blinding clouds. Meantime, a
backwash of high wind gusting 50 to 60 mph swept over northern Japan.
The foot of new snow that Tuesday to early Wednesday fell over
Cartwright, NF, Canada, was kicked around by winds of 40 to 55 mph.
High winds Wednesday swept over northwestern Saudi Arabia. At
Tabuk, winds of 45 to nearly 60 mph churned up a severe dust storm.
Some of northeastern Africa blistered Wednesday under searing
sun. At Luxor, Egypt, it was nearly 110 degrees as a dust storm cut
visibility to a few hundred yards. Temperatures soared to nearly 115
degrees at Dongola, Karima and Abu Hamed, all in Sudan.
Soaking rains swept over parts of southwestern Turkey Wednesday.
At the seaside city of Antalya, rainfall was 7.4 inches, largely
within 12 hours to midafternoon.
Winterlike cold has gripped parts of northwestern Russia this
week. In the town of Vorkuta, for example, Tuesday and Wednesday each
set a morning low of minus-12 degrees and afternoon highs of plus-1
degree. These readings are average here for mid-January, but 15-25
degrees below the means for this part of April.
