"OMAHA (DTN) -- Some areas of the high plains experienced very high winds
this past Sunday with gusts from 50 to 70 miles an hour across parts of
Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska.

A low pressure moved across Nebraska and strong jet stream winds moving
over Kansas produced extremely windy conditions. Surface winds were
southwest at 35 to 50 mph with gusts to 70 mph for about eight hours.

The strong winds produced areas of blowing dust that reduced visibility to
less than one mile at times. These high winds were responsible for some
property damage as well as damage to the winter wheat crop.

Kansas experienced the strongest wind conditions in the three states. The
Kansas Weekly Crop Reports assessed the wind damage at 68 percent of the
wheat with no damage, 22 percent with light damage, 8 percent with moderate
damage and 2 percent with severe damage. Neither Colorado nor Nebraska made
reports on wind damage.

High wind damage can sandblast leaves and stems. Symptoms include toppled
plants, small abrasions or lesions on leaves and shredding of leaf tissue.
Young plants with shallow root systems can be toppled."
