Tuesday was unusually hot in northwestern and western China.
Yuncheng, in southwestern Shanxi, flirted with the 100-degree mark
even though the mean daily high was only in the lower 70s.
Even as withering heat has spread over the Indian Subcontinent, a
relatively small part of the northeast taking in Bangladesh,
northeastern India and northwestern Myanmar, has lately been drenched
by strong, soaking thunderstorms. In India, Agartala picked up 7.2
inches of rain within three days ended Tuesday. Cox's Bazar in
southeastern Bangladesh Tuesday registered 24 hour rainfall about
three inches.
Soaking rains early this week have swept over parts of French
Guiana and Suriname, two countries in the far north of South America.
In French Guiana, the town of Saint Georges on the Oyapock River was
doused by 6.3 inches of rain within 72 hours as of Tuesday morning.
During the same time, the national capital, Cayenne, collected 3.5
inches of rain. Meanwhile, rainfall was 4.2 inches in Sipaliwini,
Suriname.
Through Tuesday, all but one day this month in New Delhi, India,
has seen 100-degree-or-greater heat. During April's first 20 days, the
average temperature here was more than 6 degrees above the mean.
Tuesday's high of 104 degrees was 7 degrees above average. The highest
mark, so far, has been 107 degrees on the 16th.
