OFFICIALS investigate possible tornado after strong thunderstorms

TONAWANDA, N.Y. --
A line of fast-moving thunderstorms pelted parts of the state Sunday with
hail and caused some power outages and other wind damage, and
meteorologists investigated damage from a possible tornado.
National Weather Service radar showed swirling winds inside the storm.
Weather officials said straight-line downburst winds with gusts of about 90
to 100 miles per hour that downed trees and damaged buildings in Niagara
County. Strong winds blew a roof off a house, felled trees and left about
800 customers temporarily without power in southern Cayuga County.

...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STORM SURVEY TEAM FINDS EVIDENCE OF A
SMALL TORNADO IN SOUTHERN CAYUGA COUNTY...

A SMALL TORNADO, RATED AS AN F0 ON THE FUJITA SCALE OF TORNADO
INTENSITY, TOUCHED DOWN BRIEFLY IN THE SOUTHEAST PART OF THE TOWN OF
SCIPIO IN SOUTHERN CAYUGA COUNTY NEAR MATHERS ROAD. THE TORNADO
OCCURRED AT 143 PM EDT SUNDAY EVENING, THE 18TH AND LASTED FOR ONLY
5 MINUTES OR SO. THE TORNADO TRACKED EAST SOUTHEAST TOWARD THE
SOUTHERN END OF OWASCO LAKE AND THEN LIFTED BY THE TIME IT REACHED
THE LAKE. THE TORNADO/S PATH LENGTH WAS ABOUT ONE HALF MILE AND ITS
WIDTH WAS ABOUT 75 YARDS. MAXIMUM WINDS WITH THIS TORNADO WERE
ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 70 MPH. THE TORNADO KNOCKED DOWN OR UPROOTED
MANY TREES ALONG ITS PATH. THERE WAS ALSO MINOR DAMAGE TO ABOUT 10
STRUCTURES. MOST OF THE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE WAS TO SHINGLES AND
SIDING. THERE WAS ONE HOME THAT HAD PART OF ITS ROOF BLOWN OFF. A
SMALL BOAT WAS OVERTURNED AND A ROW BOAT WAS BLOWN UP INTO A TREE BY
THE TORNADO.

ADDITIONALLY, THE THUNDERSTORM THAT SPAWNED THE TORNADO PRODUCED A
MUCH LARGER AREA OF SCATTERED DAMAGE FROM STRAIGHT LINE WINDS
ESTIMATED AT 60 TO 70 MPH. ABOUT 20 TO 30 ADDITIONAL STRUCTURES
SUSTAINED AT LEAST MINOR DAMAGE FROM THESE STRAIGHT LINE WINDS. MOST
OF THIS WIND DAMAGE WAS IN THE VICINITY OF THE TOWNS OF LEDYARD,
VENICE AND SCIPIO. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE WAS A ROOF THAT
WAS RIPPED OFF OF A HOME IN POPLAR RIDGE AND DAMAGE TO SEVERAL BARNS
AND SILOS IN VENICE, VENICE CENTER AND SCIPIO. NUMEROUS TREES WERE
ALSO SNAPPED OFF OR UPROOTED FROM THE WINDS IN THESE AREAS. THE WIND
DAMAGE OCCURRED BETWEEN 140 PM AND 145 PM EDT ON SUNDAY EVENING.
