Saturday, the powerful Tropical Cyclone Frank drifted erratically
over the South Indian Ocean. Late Saturday afternoon, EST, Frank is
within 185 miles east-northeast of Saint Brandon (the Cargados Carajos
Shoals) and 440 miles northeast of mainland Mauritius. Moving
southeastward at 5 mph, Frank wields highest sustained winds of more
than 130 mph and top gusts of 160 mph. The storm is forecast to
maintain its southeasterly tack for the next 24-48 hours; if so, it
would be headed away from any land.
Tropical Cyclone Linda, meanwhile, is gathering strength over the
eastern South Indian Ocean. Linda is drifting southwards and away
from Australia's remote Cocos (or Keeling) Islands with top sustained
winds of 50 mph. Linda is of no immediate threat to any land.
Tropical Cyclone Elita has come back to life over the Mozambique
Channel near Madagascar. As of late Saturday afternoon, EST, Elita is
centered less than 25 miles west-southwest of Morondava, Madagascar,
with top sustained winds of 40 mph. The cyclone is forecast to drift
toward the northwest and north during the next 24-48 hours keeping the
center of the storm over open water, but close enough to send heavy,
potentially flooding rains and strong, gusty winds to Madagascar.
Further strengthening is also anticipated. Earlier in the week, Elita
pounded Madagascar with damaging winds and torrential rains as it made
landfall near Majunga. From there the cyclone largely dissipated while
loitering over land. On Saturday, the remnant low re-emerged over the
Mozambique Channel and began to strengthen.
Sweltering heat in South America on Friday helped instigate an
outbreak of strong, drenching thunderstorms over the Pampas of
Argentina. Along the waterfront in the city of Buenos Aires, a
rainfall of 5.2 inches was registered as downpours with gusts of 45-55
mph lasted through Friday night. In the open country, rainfall was 3.5
inches at Las Flores, and 3.0 inches at Junin.
Saturday and Saturday night saw strong winds belt central and
southern England as well as Wales. Some of the highest winds lashed
Lyneham, England. Here, gusts of 60-70 mph were clocked during a
4-hour period late Saturday afternoon to early Saturday night, local
time. Greater London was also whipped by fierce winds. The Heathrow
airport registered 55-mph gusts.
