[STORMREPORTS] Temperature Swings in Montana on Thursday

From: Jesse Ferrell (WeatherMatrix) (jesse{at}weathermatrix.net)
Date: Sat Jan 31 2004 - 14:22:47 EST

NOTES:

A nearby Agri station shows a rise in temperature from -5 to 35 in a matter
of minutes on Friday afternoon. The wind gust increased from 20
(sustained at 5) to 43mph at the time as well, with nearly a 180 degree
change on wind direction. The "fall" you see in the graph a few hours
later was the station stopping transmitting for about 15 hours (the line is
linear).

I'm not sure why the NWS would be "Skeptical" (see media article below)
because their own station at Cut Bank, MT showed a 30 degree temperature
rise during two hours at nearly the same time Friday, then a drop of 20
degrees in 5 minutes and a .16" fall in pressure Friday night. Maybe they
meant they were skeptical about the amount (a nearly-50 degree fall claimed).
Perhaps the high school teacher was misquoted as saying this happened on
Thursday, because both of these events were on Friday.

The NWS out of Great Falls issued some Local Storm Reports for high wind
gusts during this event but did not mention temperature swings (the event
was an Outflow Boundary according to them)

QUOTES FROM MEDIA ARTICLE:
http://www.greatfallstribune.com/news/stories/20040131/localnews/325859.html

"In addition to harsh weather conditions this week, the region also has
experienced some rare wintertime climate phenomena.

The areas of Showdown and White Sulphur Springs, south of Great Falls, and
Great Divide near Marysville all saw thunderstorms on Friday.

Along the Rocky Mountain Front, weather watchers recorded drastic
temperature swings.

Browning High School science teacher Don Keihn said he recorded a 49-degree
temperature swing in six minutes on Thursday.

While weather experts in Great Falls were skeptical, they said the shift is
possible.

Great Falls actually holds the world record for the greatest temperature
swing in the shortest length of time.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service office recorded a
temperature change from minus 32 degrees Fahrenheit to 15 degrees
Fahrenheit in seven minutes on Jan. 11, 1980, Williamson said."
