"Drivers on U.S. Highway 2 between Essex and East Glacier Park experienced
both slippery driving conditions when travel resumed on the road Friday.
Avalanche activity closed the highway, the major vehicle passage across
northern Montana, periodically Tuesday, Wednesday and overnight Thursday.
Montana Department of Transportation plows and sand trucks hit the highway
hard on Friday. But MDT Friday night was still advising emergency travel
only over the snowpacked highway from East Glacier to Browning, along the
southern tip of Glacier National Park.
Severe weather continued to prevent Amtrak Empire Builder from service on
Friday. The passenger shuttle from Chicago to Seattle will not resume in
the region until Feb. 1 at the earliest, said railroad spokesman Marc
Magliari in a news release.
Blizzard conditions near the town of Pinnacle on the southwestern edge of
Glacier National Park stranded a resident there Thursday and Friday, said
Sgt. Jeff Fauque of the Glacier County Sheriff's Office in Cut Bank.
More than 30 inches of snow has fallen at Teton Pass 25 miles west of
Choteau. Big Mountain Resort north of Whitefish reported 54 inches of snow
in the last seven days for a total of 224 inches this season."
